The article does list this place under the "Where to Find it" tab:
Oregon:
11th Avenue Liquor (503-236-2076)
Not real specific.
And at BevMo! here in Cali, but I'm sure it's found elsewhere as well.
They have Japanese Whiskeys at the Beaverton Liquor store, as you just walk in to the left, they are on the right hand side with the other whiskeys. They have several different varieties and ages.
I have to admit that I grew very fond of whiskey in a can while I was in Japan in the fall. They have all different varieties of whiskey, from low to high, mixed with water and packaged in a convenient can for your shinkansen ride. I have seen them in vending machines, but they are mostly available at convenience stores. What a civilized country!
Every time I cracked one of those open, I couldn't help but hold it aloft and say, "It's Suntory time."
Huh, I didn't see any on the OLCC's list, but that doesn't mean that they don't bring it in as a special order.
Definitely special order. I haven't checked 11th Ave for these, as I find Japanese whiskey too expensive in general. To quote myself from Mar 1:
Beaverton Town Center store has the Suntory 18yr ($120) and the Yamazaki 12 yr ($45).
The article lists the Yamazaki 12 at $70, so maybe its a great deal (they may have had it for years). Either that or I'm wrong about the price in the 'tron, but I think I wrote it down to be sure. I do like Speyside, so maybe I'll put the Yamazaki on the list to try.
I've seen the Yamazaki 12 y.o. at 11th Avenue and, I think, at Uptown. It seems to me I've seen one or two others from time to time, but not often. And not cheap.
I had Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible with me on a trip to the UK and on the way home (via Lufthansa) made a stab at finding German whiskey in the duty-free store. "Oh, no no, Germans don't make whiskey," the nice lady assured me. I showed her the section in the book and succeeded only in confusing her.
The blog/site Nonjatta is a great repository of information on Japanese whisky, NONJATTA.
Turns out the best Scotch in the world is Japanese:
