Consume and write about your favorite, strongest drink. You know, the one that that is delightful, complex, and will leave you wanting to stay home from work the next day. It should contain at least 3oz of 80-proof spirit or have less than 1/2oz of non-spiritness.

I'm almost thinking of resurrecting a drink that I haven't made in years (back in my Hard Rock Cafe days, yes, I worked for them, ughh), the Hurricane. In fact, I'm pretty sure I remember the old HRC recipe, I should take it and tweak it a bit and put it up.

    Anyone else interested in MxMo?

Experiments are already well underway, but it'll be up on tradertiki.com before Sunday.

If you want to have a session at the home bar, let me know, and be sure to bring a pillow and bucket, it'll be a good time.

Reading this post finds me with a 1937 Zombie punch in my hand, which I'm pretty darn sure is my favorite, strongest drink - maybe the 1950 is a close tie. Certainly sweeter, given the very spicy homemade falernum I got. While I don't have a blog, I was pretty darned excited about the May 'Rum' MxMo hosted by Blair. I think I'm up to about 12 rums, which is probably on the far side of reason for a home bar.

Lance when I make myself drinks that make me want to stay home from work the next day, I love the classic basics.

Brandy Manhatten with Cinzano red vermouth and a big fat lemon twist?

Although Sylvan, I like your Zombie idea. You got me thinking about my Spring menu...

    Cheers

    Bradley,

I love Manhattans, and I do think the Zombie is an inspired idea. However, the Hurricane seems to have no set recipe other than loads o' booze, and I think I'd like to play with it and see if I can create something tasty and balanced yet boozy. I'll probably start playing with this later in the week. I've got to finalize my TOTC Punch and my Averna Cocktail before I take on yet another project.

Lance, there's a good (GOOD) Hurricane recipe in Grog Log (2 oz Lemon, 2 oz PF, 4 oz Dark Jamaican) that makes for a mean one.  You can probably find some way to punch it up, but it's a damned fine starting point.  Don't think I've made one since I started using Coruba instead of Myers... and my own homemade Passion Fruit Syrup instead of finest call... so, about 5 years since I made one.  heh.  I'll have to toss one together tonight, for science.

And I believe that was even after my last experience with Pat O'Brien's Hurricane mix... I never thought I could projectile vomit so far or colorfully.

Sylvan, 12 rums sounds like a good start.  I... wow, just counted and I'm up to 50 (well, if you count Bacardi Big Apple).  It's still nowhere near enough.

Ok, you both have me beat solidly in the rum dept (for the record, my passions run towards rye, bourbon, gin and amaros). I might have 4 or 5 rums in the house at any given time.

I called HRC last night to refresh my memory of their Hurricane (for accuracy's sake) and instead of using a passionfruit juice like I remember, now they use mango puree (in addition to oj and pineapple). Then I started doing a bit more research and found all kinds of things being labeled a Hurricane as long as they contained several rums. I'm thinking about leaving out the passionfruit juice or cutting it way back (too sweet for my tastes) and maybe rethinking what juices to put in. Of course, by the time I'm done messing around, it may not be a Hurricane at all, but who cares?

Just do what the tiki-imitators of old did, and call it a hurricane, or get out your thesaurus and find a nice synonym.

The Mayhew Maelstrom has my vote.

I dunno, I'm thinking of naming it the Emperor's Club Cocktail in honor of Elliott Spitzer

My favorite all booze drink right now is the Chauncey.

    3/4 rye

    3/4 gin

    3/4 sw ver

    1/2 brandy

    dash orange bitters

I like to garnish it with a fat orange zest to add a fresh quality

Just put mine up, an original concoction.

    Wisdom of Pelé

It's a lot of work, but one helluva drink that sips like apple juice and kicks like an angry mule.  I'll be putting it on the home bar menu, for those swingers which swing by.

So, this is not at all a tiki drink, but it's my favorite.

    Tipperary:

Equal parts (I prefer an oz of each)

    Irish whiskey

    Sweet vermouth

    Green Chartreuse

So, not for the light of heart, but with  Carpano Antica, I think it's beautiful.  And nothing if not spirit driven.

I did my version of the Hurricane. I actually had much more to write, but then I consumed my concoction and got stuck on stupid last night. I'm debating whether to edit my post or not this morning.

A funny story that has little to do with the initial thread here:

As a group of you returned late Saturday after the Jerry Thomas event, a fellow asked me for a Hurricane, & not having Trader Vic's book on hand, I approximated, as follows:

    1 oz. Coruba

    1 oz. Ron Matusalem Platino

    3/4 oz. lemon

    1/2 oz. OJ

    dash local pastis

    3 dashes Regan's Orange Bitters

Float 1/2 oz. Rhum Barbancourt 5-star

As I handed it to the "gentleman", he quipped "don't ever put tabasco in my drink again, man!"

After some hearty laughter among the group, a couple of the brothers Munat had the concoction & thoroughly enjoyed it, so there.
