Just a thought, but I was thinking that when we get notice that a product is going out of production or won't be imported, it might be nice for us to archive some of the product so that we have the real item to compare it against if we were trying to recreate it at home. I can think of Amer Picon off the top of my head that it would be nice to have a few bottles of in an archive. Any others?

    Interesting idea.

I try to keep a little of everything in my liquor cabinet for future reference. I was able to secure two bottle of the old-label Plymouth gin, and, unfortunately for bar archaeology (barchaeology?) it seems to be the same formula as the current label.

Perhaps we can use this thread to keep a running inventory of what we all have on hand.

I was talking to Kevin last night and he suggested a repository of liquors not available in this state as well.

I'm almost envisioning this as a library system where you can check out a bottle when needed.

kind of a BookMooch sort of deal (I'm soo articulate on a single cup of coffee)

The way BookMooch basically works, is that a user-member posts a list of what (books) they'd be willing to send away.Just listing gives the user-member a few fractional points with which they can spend by requesting a book. Sending a book when requested earns a point. The thing is, BookMooch actually works, user-members seem to feel that other user-members act fairly.

I think we should consider a standard sample size, maybe 2oz.

Or, in a less-technical kind of way, perhaps this thread becomes a place to shout out a request. I can even start a new category if there's enough interest.

I was thinking that at some point, maybe we rent a climate controlled storage unit. Throw some industrial shelves in there and maybe a couple of chairs and a table. Just fill out a form to check the bottle out, and mark the bottle at its fill level when you return it. I know 2 oz isn't usually enough to do my product reviews, I almost hate to limit people without knowing what they'd need.

I love this concept, though really I think we'd need to hire a templar knight as guardian, and perhaps devise a system of keys pass amongst several members, to be left to the last man living.

I would gladly contribute a few bottles, albeit my desire would be to store them until they are no longer available... as happens far too often.

There is a decent climate controlled (wine) storage facility in inner SE that is equipped with a tasting room and (wine) glasses and a dishwasher.

But I think we may find that simply encouraging that members casually arrange swaps of samples/bottles will keep anyone from feeling cheated.

I also love the concept. I just think some of us would feel more comfortable with a couple controls, a set of dials for tracking karma.
