Any interest in us all picking a spirit of the week, playing around with it in our spare time and maybe posting what we come up with here?
Sounds like an accelerated version of Mixology Monday, which usually has me deep in the books and bar on many a Sunday eve.
My concern with this would be that, particularly for MxMo, I end up three cocktails into an experiment or research and have to call it a night (I don't care if it didn't come out great, I'm not wasting my liquor!). Being able to share the experiments and sampling could work better for life and liver.
speaking of MixMon, when & what is the next one?
From the host himself, my friend Jimmy Patrick.
Next month is "variations." This could be your own variation for a classic recipe, or several recipe variations along a theme, or using a different spirit in a standard recipe.
I don't know when the exact date is for February's MxMo. I'll ask.
I'll be setting up a post for MxMo on variations on the Mai Tai. One formula, and about 5 variations off of it available at most Trader Vic's, and that's not even going into the various permutations and recreations that made it into popular culture.
Like I say though, I'd be more apt to go for a meetup on the discussion of particular liquors and liqueurs.
I was thinking something like this could happen: A bartender posts that they have a certain product available which they are willing to taste people on for a week or whatever. Guild members can then go to that bar and try that product. If you pick up something interesting on a trip, you can stash it behind your bar and over the week people can come in and try it -even if you're not there. It doesn't have to be an opportunity open to members at all levels. It can even be an enticement for people to raise their commitment level to the guild. "At $100 you can participate in the guild's tasting club." The thing is that it'd be an enticement for members to visit each other's bars. And a way to share a product. Maybe the board can even decide if the product is interesting enough to reimburse the purchaser.
We might want to be careful about charging money to drink liquor that's not carried by the OLCC, there, kids. I brought up that Bluecoat, and Lance was quite generous with his Old Tom at the last event, so what if we dedicated a little slot of time before or after each event to tasting?
I'm all for that. Now that my blog is paying certain "dividends" as it is, I'd be happy to bring the occasional bottle by to let my fellow guild members taste. For instance, I fell in love with Averna's new lemon liqueur, I think its far superior to limoncello for making cocktails.
I'm hot for tasting that Averna Lemon liqueur.
I had the chance to attend the Grey Goose event at Aqua Riva on monday and the Mixologist gave me a half bottle of Amer Picon. Available for only Guild members to taste. I'm protecting it with my life but if any of you want to stop by and try it, or stay for a Brooklyn you are all welcome.
Why don't you bring it on Sunday. I'll try to remember my bottle of Torani Amer and we can compare the two
Ok, do we want to list who is bringing what on Sunday for OBG tasting?
