Hello...
Despite the fact that I am neither a professional bartender nor live in Oregon, Jeffrey has been kind enough to invite me to participate in this forum.
I feel a bit like I am butting in...
But, hey, he asked, so here I am.
I am a cocktail enthusiast, blog "author," and contributor to the DrinkBoy and eGullet.org forums, where I usually go by a nom de web like: eje, ejellest, or erik_flannestad.
My actual name is Erik Ellestad and I currently live and work in San Francisco, CA.
I know some of you virtually and some in person, and I hope you don't mind if I pipe in from time to time.
I can't wait to get back up to Oregon to taste some of the fruits of these discussions.
Cheers!
Erik
I hope we can get you up here again soon for some cocktail research. Your last visit was way too short.
Yes, welcome Erik. Or, to quote one of my favorite old movies, Freaks, "We accept you as one of us, gooble gobble".
Your input will be invaluable to us, and if anyone hasn't seen your Stomping through the Savoy post on EGullet, they are missing out.
Jeff, are you reminding me to hyperlink things now that I know how?
Erik,
next time you're in Oregon, shoot an e-mail!
and next time I'm in S.F., don't be in Minnesota!
Love what you're doing with the Savoy. I'm pretty sure if you come up to Oregon again we'd all be willing to help knock out a few letters.
Welcome Eric.
Indeed, my last visit to Portland was too short!
It was great fun hanging out at the Teardrop Lounge, House Spirits, and Clyde Commons. Plus, my wife and I had some really amazing food at Park Kitchen and good beer at Bailey's Tap Room.
It really is a great city to visit, especially if you are as food and drink obsessed as I am.
I really respect that bartenders are the ones on the ground in the war against bad drinks. I like to think what we do at eGullet does something to elevate the discussion. But, a lot of the time we are just preaching to the choir. It is you guys (and gals) in the field who do the real hard work to take these ideas to the public on a practical level.
If there is ever anything I can do, let me know.
As always, if any of you get down to San Francisco drop a note. I'm always eager to geek out about spirits, cocktails and technique with my fellow "Freaks".
~Erik
Erik:
Most welcome, sir. I figured this was just the sort of thing you'd like to be a part of, & we appreciate any comments you have to offer in our discussions. I know egullet forums helped me develop a greater understanding of the principles of good drink prior to Teardrop opening. & I know you'll help keep us honest in our discussions, or at least remind us when we bastardize authentic origins of drinks.
Please tell me, at the very least, we'll be able to catch up in New Orleans.
-Daniel
Yep, I'm planning on being at Tales of the Cocktail this year.
Paul Clarke has convinced me to be on a panel about homemade ingredients with him, Jamie Boudreau, and John Deragon.
I'll look forward to seeing you there!
