Hey guys Any idea which wine rep carries Noilly Pratt Dry Vermouth here? I'm looking to put it in my well and can't figure out who's carrying it.

Lemma. I'll check their catalog tomorrow. I'm also looking to find out who carries Cinzano, so I'll post here if I find anything.

For all you fans - and I know you are - Lemma also carries the Carpano line... at least Punt e Mes and Antica Formula.

  1.

Lemma does not carry Noilly Pratt.  Matter of fact, the product was pulled from all US distribution as of 1/1/08. Sorry for the bad news

Wow. That's horrible news. I just cleaned out one of my liquor stores of their last four bottles today. He was going to order more from the OLCC of all places... tomorrow. I guess he's going to be in for a bit of a shock.

I found some Noilly Pratt at the Highland Hills Liquor store in Beaverton.  Britt is the Manager there and she's doing a great job at stocking bartender friendly spirits.  I've got her number if anyone is interested in contacting.  Just send me an email.

How many bottles are at Hyland Hills?

Someone, talk to Young's Columbia. They tell me that they're still in charge of Noilly, and that they're not going to have any problems getting more.
  4.

I bought her last bottle of dry vermouth on Wednesday, I talked to her yesterday on the phone and she's got a case on order.  But she's got about 6 bottles of sweet vermouth on the shelf.  In addition to that she's got 5 bottles of Torani Amer on the shelf too.

Does anyone know anything about the spirit Zwack?  It's a Hungarian liqueur, supposed to be really really herbal and bitter.  Has anyone tried it or carry it?

It's been forever since I've tried Zwack. It is intensely herbal. It was great after a gigantic meal, when you're feeling envious of a beached whale; a dram helps get the body moving again.

EDITED TO ADD: it was the Unicum I've had, thanks for clarifying that, Erik.

Zwack is a Hungarian company that makes a bunch of stuff, including some pretty funky apricot eau-de-vies.

They make a couple bitter things, including their Unicum bitters, which comes in a bottle shaped kinda like a hand grenade.

Seems like they're doing some sort of re-launch of the product in the US this year.

I haven't tried Unicum myself.  Some folks compare the flavor to Jaegermeister.  It's that sort of European bitter herbal spice thing.  Strong cardamom element.

People I trust say it works pretty well sitting in for the bitters in things like Old-Fashioneds.

When I posted Noilly Pratt was kaput in the US, I had it on very good authority, & now I shall castrate the man for lying to me.  Well, Pearl Liquor store is bringing it in this week; they'll have regular supply.  I'll probably bring those guys to one of our meetings; they're really excited about what we're doing, & are bending over backward for the biz.

Yep, I spoke with my Young's (Columbia) rep again this afternoon and he assures me that the rumor is false. Oh, well, at least I've got a half-case in reserve in the liquor room for the Apocalypse.

I'm sure Noilly-Pratt appreciates the spike in stock price, though, Daniel!

There was some interesting Noilly related talk last year at Tales of the Cocktail.

That Noilly Prat had been selling different products in Europe and the US.

With the US getting a lighter, more dry Martini friendly version, and Europe getting a more robust version suitable for drinking on its own.

The rumor was that Noilly was going to discontinue the US version and standardize on the European version at the beginning of 2008.

Given the amount of dry vermouth I go through in Savoy Cocktails, more flavor didn't really seem like a bad thing to me when the rumor was presented to me.

I've not gotten confirmation of this rumor nor that the switch happened, but the persons who were mongering it were well informed and well connected.

I have also tried the Unicum Zwack- are there others?  As far as Unicum is concerned, stories I have heard place it as a Hungarian liqueur meant to aid in digestion.  I have found it extremely unpalatable, emphasis on extremely.   Jaegermeister strikes me as much sweeter.

That said, I like a well stocked restaurant bar that displays a variety of digestives (spelling?).  I once had a post meal flight of spirits that included Fernet-branca, Unicum Zwack, and Becherovka.  I find Becherovka far more palate pleasing.

I'd be really curious to try out the eau-de-vies Eric mentioned...Any idea if they're available state side?
