Schalke stops series of bankruptcies, Werder misses top of the table

Take a deep breath: Schalke has won for the first time after five recent bankruptcies. Leipzig spoils Hoffenheim’s dress rehearsal before the duel against Manchester City, and VfB wins despite a bitter own goal.

FC Schalke – Mainz 05 1:0 (1:0)

The runners-up can still win: Schalke has taken the first step out of the crisis and finished the negative series of five bankruptcies on the sixth matchday of the Bundesliga. Mainz started courageously, but the 1-0 scored Königsblau: Alessandro Schöpf scored after a cross by Yevhen Konoplyanka per head (11th minute). In the second half, Konoplyanka missed the preliminary, only hitting the crossbar in a direct free-kick (59th).

With Naldo and Bayern access Sebastian Rudy, Schalke lacked well-known professionals in the starting eleven. In the end, they should be able to free the team even without it. Also because Mainz didn’t use his chances. Schalke – temporarily penultimate in the standings – will now play away matches against Lokomotive Moskau in the Champions League and Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday.

VfB Stuttgart – Werder Bremen 2:1 (1:0)

It could have been a special day for Bremen. After the Bayern bankruptcy in Berlin on Friday, Werder could have led the table for the first time since January 2007. But that didn’t work out: In Stuttgart, Florian Kohfeldt’s team has conceded its first defeat of the season – in return, VfB was able to celebrate its first league success in 2018/2019. This should make things calmer for coach Tayfun Korkut for the time being.

The focus of the game was a curious goal, which Keeper Ron-Robert Zieler made possible in the 68th minute by an own goal. Borna Sosa threw the ball after a throw-in towards the goalkeeper, who let the ball slip through, but touched him slightly – goal. Bitter: If Zieler had not touched the ball, it would have continued with corner kick for Werder. According to the rules, no direct goal can be scored from a throw-in.

Stuttgart scored 1-0 after a fantastic steep pass from Daniel Didavi to goal scorer Anastasios Donis (19.). A little later, Milos Veljkovic from Bremen had to leave the pitch with a yellow-red. Werder remained outnumbered for a long time and in the end Gonzalo Castro made the VfB victory perfect (75th). Now the BVB could become the new front runner with a success in the evening match at Bayer Leverkusen.

TSG Hoffenheim – RB Leipzig 1:2 (0:0)

In the duel with his future employer, Hoffenheim’s coach Julian Nagelsmann had to accept a defeat. Against RB Leipzig his team lost in front of their own audience. While Timo Werner narrowly missed the leading goal in the first half – his shot collided with the left post – Yussuf Poulsen made it better in the second run. The Dane made use of a Werner pass from ten meters (53rd) and made the decision a little later: After a cross, the attacker pushed the ball over the line from five metres (73rd). Hoffenheim’s goal in injury time by Andrej Kramaric came too late. Leipzig are now sixth, TSG only tenth before the duel against Manchester City in the premier class with seven points.

VfL Wolfsburg – Borussia Mönchengladbach 2:2 (1:1)

This summer Alassana Plèa switched to Borussia Mönchengladbach for 23 million euros. The obligation seems to have already been worth it: In the fifth minute, the Frenchman scored his fourth goal of the season and it was well worth seeing: After a counterattack, Plèa flicked the ball sensitively into the long corner. Shortly thereafter, however, the hosts levelled off. After a bad pass from Plèa, Renato Steffen finished successfully from 20 metres (12th).

After the restart Thorgan Hazard scored 2:1 for Gladbach, but also the second lead should not last long: Wout Weghorst equalled after 59 minutes. Borussia are fifth after the draw, Wolfsburg are still seventh despite a winning lottery series of four games.

1. FC Nuremberg – Fortuna Düsseldorf 3:0 (1:0)

1. FC Nuremberg has after the 0:7 bankruptcy at BVB on Wednesday made amends. Against Fortuna Düsseldorf, coach Michael Köllner’s team celebrated their second victory of the season. Hanno Beherens brought the club into the lead after a penalty kick (28th), in the 64th minute the promoted player added more: Mikael Ishak ran alone towards Michael Rensing after a header extension and finished confidently. The substitute Federico Palacios made the final score (79th). Due to their success, the Nürnberger jumped to ninth place. Düsseldorf thus conceded their second consecutive bankruptcy and dropped back to 14th place.

BVB turns two goals behind and leads the table

Bayer Leverkusen clearly led Borussia Dortmund during the break. The BVB took up the pace late, but managed to turn the spectacular game around shortly before the end.

Borussia Dortmund won through a strong final phase at Bayer Leverkusen. After the 4:2 (0:2) victory, the BVB is now in first place in the table. Leverkusen went through goals from Mitchell Weiser (9th minute) and Jonathan Tah (39th) with a clear lead into the break. In the second round, BVB entered the match and equalled with Jacob Bruun Larsen (65th) and Marco Reus (69th). The substitute Paco Alcácer provided the lead in the 85th minute and shortly before the final whistle for the 4:2 final score (90.+4).

The 1:0 was a perfect example for the game idea of the Leverkusen team: Lars Bender used Kai Havertz, who played directly to Lucas Alario on the wing. His high ball into the back found the moved up Weiser, left alone by the BVB, who shot the ball into the long corner with a worth seeing direct reduction (9.).

The second goal fell in consequence of the aggressive Leverkusener Nachsetzen. Dortmund was too slow after a fire corner to clear the ball from the penalty area. Bayer pressed the BVB defensive, conquered the ball and via Havertz he reached Tah. He loaded Achraf Hakimi and scored the 2-0 lead (39th).

In the second half, the BVB first came to a first good chance. After a corner, Reus got to the ball, but was pushed over the goal by Tah (48th). Bayer answered again with speed: Brandt ran unchallenged through the midfield and failed with his shot from the edge of the penalty area against the strong parrying Roman Bürki (50th).

Leverkusen continued to put the visitors under pressure: After winning the ball in the 54th minute, Havertz played to Lars Bender, who played for Kevin Volland. However, he only hit the post. Just three minutes later Bürki saved again against Brandt.

After one hour Dortmund took the pace of the hosts and rewarded for more courage in the offensive. At first Hakimi brought the ball to Reus at the long post, the attacker failed at Lukas Hradecky, who could only fend off in the middle to Bruun Larsen, who pushed in to 1:2 (65th). Only three minutes later, Jadon Sancho picked up speed after a quick Bürki drop at his own goal, played a double double pass with Reus and the German international scored to equalize.

Leverkusen seemed shocked, the BVB remained stubborn and was successful. After a presentation by Hakimi, Alcácer first scored the lead (85th) and scored shortly before the final whistle to the 4:2 final score into the empty Leverkusen goal (90.+4).
